Diet and protein

Bone-health diet priorities, protein targets, mineral intake, and oxalate-related notes.

Diet shapes bone quality over time.

Protein sufficiency, mineral intake, and enough total food all matter.

Common risk factors

  • small body size

  • protein deficiency

  • vegetarian diets, which have been associated with roughly 4% lower BMD

  • vegan diets, which have been associated with roughly 6% lower BMD

  • very low-protein or strongly alkaline diet patterns

  • nutrient deficiency

  • under-eating

  • no resistance or impact training

  • excess alcohol

  • early menopause or aromatase-inhibitor use

General nutrition starting point

Use the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation nutrition guidance.

Protein targets

Complete protein intake is a central bone-support strategy.

Suggested ranges:

  • 1.3–1.8 g/kg ideal body weight to maintain bone

  • 1.8–2.2 g/kg ideal body weight to rebuild or support bone gain

If food intake stays low, protein support options in the supplementation section can help fill the gap.

Other diet priorities

Minerals

Eat a wide variety of plant and animal foods when possible.

Supplemental support may still be needed.

Fats

Limit highly processed inflammatory fats.

Carbohydrates

Limit simple carbohydrates that drive large glucose and insulin spikes.

Oxalate timing note

High-oxalate foods can reduce effective calcium intake when eaten at the same time.

One example is spinach taken with yogurt or a calcium-containing smoothie.

Practical takeaway

For bone support, start with enough food.

Then make sure protein, minerals, and digestion are not the missing pieces.

A restrictive diet can look clean on paper and still be bone-unfriendly if protein and minerals stay too low.
