Background, lived experience, and community work behind My Healing Community

Abbey Mitchell is the founder of My Healing Community, co-creator of the Breast Cancer Pathways Worksheet, lead admin, and founder of The Healing Cancer Study Support Group.

Her work is grounded in lived experience, long-term self-education, and a practical commitment to helping others navigate cancer with more clarity, support, and agency.

Lived experience

Abbey's cancer journey began in 2014 with a diagnosis of lobular breast cancer at age 43.

That diagnosis led to a left mastectomy, followed by a period away from oncology.

In 2017, she learned the cancer had metastasised to nine areas in her bones.

That marked the beginning of a deep and sustained engagement with integrative healing.

From that point, she immersed herself in new daily habits, dietary protocols, movement, stillness, and the psychological and emotional work of healing.

She also focused on understanding hormonal drivers, inflammatory pathways, and research-backed ways to support the body alongside conventional care.

This broad approach was followed by a long period with no evidence of disease.

A scan in mid-2025 later revealed a new lesion on one vertebra.

Abbey's April - Aug 2026 Update:

Both my scans this year showed that the big spot that had taken up residence in my spine at T6 and was treated with radiotherapy is now no longer active on the PET scans. At the same time, the scans did pick up signs that the cancer has become more active in some other bones.

In late June, scans suggested that my breast cancer was not responding to aromatase inhibition plus a CDK4/6 inhibitor. My oncologist offered prescreening for a trial of inavolisib with fulvestrant, and a FoundationOne liquid biopsy was taken that day. While considering that option, I compared other Australian trials for PIK3CA/AKT-pathway altered breast cancer. I chose to pursue a trial in Sydney, began prescreening in Sydney on 4 August, and was blessed to be accepted and assigned the new drug Zovegalisib (RLY-2608) (with Fulvestrant) on 25 August. I have shared my study support notes here to help others navigate some of the complexities of what may be their safest way forward post-CDK4/6i resistance. These notes may also be helpful if a person is really not tolerating the side effects of their current PIK3CA/AKT drug.

Both my Foundation One trial screening tests reported that my cancer carries a PIK3CA mutation. Zovegalisib RLY-2608 is designed to preferentially target mutant PI3K-alpha—the abnormal growth signal in cancer cells—while sparing more of the normal PI3K-alpha function needed elsewhere in the body. The RLY-2608 screening also showed I have a ESR1 mutation and the Fulvestrant will help with this mutation as it simultaneously targets estrogen-receptor signalling. The aim is to block two cancer growth pathways while potentially reducing the glucose, rash, and gastrointestinal toxicities associated with other, less mutant-selective PI3K medicines.

I’m feeling positive — no matter what comes next.

What this work has become

Since 2019, Abbey has acted as a compassionate guide for people navigating cancer.

Her role is not to replace medical care.

It is to connect people with useful research, practical information, and thoughtful support across conventional, integrative, and complementary approaches.

That includes helping people think more clearly about the physical, psychological, and spiritual realities of a diagnosis.

Day to day, she facilitates a worldwide community where members can share experiences, ask better questions, and learn from one another.

The aim is to help people become more informed and more active participants in their own healing process.
